Operational Efficiencies and Effectiveness

Supporting cross-functional team development at a nuclear facility

The client is a nuclear facility, which is part of a larger Energy Generation Company. The organization has implemented cross-function teams in an attempt to break down silos between four departments (Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, and Work Control) and to proactively improve the health of the electricity generating facility.

Client's Challenge

A year after implementation of the cross-functional teams program, teams still experience many problems and improvement to plant health are not evident. Some of the challenges include:

  • A lack of accountability is placed on team members to work on the right initiatives and many team members are not sure how they can contribute.
  • Management is perceived as unsupportive of team initiatives and isn’t receptive to removing barriers to success.

StraNexus' Approach
The objective of the project was to improve overall system health by supporting System Health Teams (SHTs) with their short term objectives. The approach included:

  • Creating and testing tools that teams can use to increase collaboration and effectiveness
  • Coaching and mentoring Team Leads before and following team meetings
  • Interviewing key stakeholders to better understand expectations from various parties involved

Results

  • Alignment of senior management on the vision for the initiative and key measures of success
  • Improved communication between teams and management through an issue log, joint meetings, and a task management tool
  • Increased awareness of roles and responsibilities of team members through drafting, validating, and communicating roles and responsibilities
